Brief History

There were eight bells detailed in 1552 but before 1734 they had been reduced to seven. In 1734 Richard Phelps recast the remaining bells and augmented them back to eight. In the 1960's a bell was transferred from St Lawrence, Winchester for use as a flat sixth. By 1993 restoration was required. The thirteen bells hung in four separate bellframes, supported by the belfry floor which moved noticeably during ringing. The two bellframes supporting the four trebles were removed, the metal frame for the flat sixth was temporarily dismantled and the original frame in which the back eight were hung was lifted clear of the belfry floor which was then repaired and strengthened. The old frame was strengthened and reinstated, as was the frame for the flat sixth. A new timber frame was installed and the front four trebles rehung together with three new bells. The new bells allow a diatonic ring of fourteen to be rung as well as two rings of ten (in F, using the poorly toned flat eighth, and G).
